Today I want to take a look at a company I have personally used on a few occasions over the last couple of years while travelling in Europe. It’s a company that is often overlooked compared to others offering a similar service but one I think more should consider when planning a trip to Europe. In my opinion, it is actually the cheapest way to travel around Europe for an extended period. Let’s have a look at “Why travel with Busabout” is an option worth considering for your next adventure.
I think this is a really good service for anyone that is wanting to go to Europe and travel multiple countries yet have the flexibility to plan the trip as they go or make changes with no absurd changing fee. In fact, I think it’s the best way to travel Europe. They also offer tour options in other locations including South East Asia, the USA and Africa. But today we will focus on how you can create your own Busabout Europe Guide 2020.
What (or who) is Busabout?
Busabout is a UK-based travel company founded in 1998, which crafted the concept of freestyle travelling at economical prices. The company mainly caters to younger travellers – particularly backpackers and solo travellers – planning trips to Europe, Asia and North Africa. With buses heading to over 180 cities and scheduled to leave every other day, there is significant demand for its services during the high season, which runs from May to October. The travel company also attracts a sizeable crowd through its culture and music festivals and island-hopping packages along the spectacular Dalmatian coast and to Greek islands.

Who uses Busabout
Busabout primarily attracts young solo travellers between the ages of 18 and 30, a large proportion of which are Aussies (so you know you’ll have a great time in transit)! There is no upper age limit on Busabout passes; what unites travellers using Busabout is the desire to socialise with other travellers and preserve their flexibility whilst exploring the cities and towns in which Busabout operates. Typically, a Busabout passenger will spend at least a couple of weeks to a month on the road.

How does Busabout work?
Busabout offers two types of passes: one catering to short trips and another to long trips. Short trips cater to a duration of 1-4 weeks, permitting 3 to 9 stops at Busabout’s destinations, whilst long trips cater to trips featuring a minimum of 12 stops or those seeking an unlimited pass. When you purchase a pass, your trip guaranteed and you gain access to a community of travellers which takes away the loneliness or fear which may come with solo travel. Also, it is just so easy!
See the pass options available and the current prices
It is extremely reassuring to know that if you really dislike a particular city, or encounter issues during your travels, you can simply hop back onto one of their buses which depart every other day. The guides on each bus are a great resource for understanding the attractions in each place and you will naturally develop what will feel like a strong connection or cosmic bond after spending every day with other Busabout travellers for an extended period of time, particularly when you bump into each other on the road again after having parted ways to explore different cities! Your brightly coloured Busabout bracelet is a great identifier which will help you to locate others sharing your Busabout experience whilst on the road.
The main benefit of Busabout is the fact that the standard passes are not guided tours, despite the presence of guides who can tell you about the history of a place, what to watch out for and where to visit. The Hop-on, Hop-off feature means that you can go ‘off-piste’ for a few days before jumping back on-board again. You can determine the pace at which you wish to travel and whether to make your trip a more relaxed lounge-around holiday, or a fast-paced, whirlwind tour of what a continent or region has to offer. If you opt to visit as many cities as possible, you will have a much better idea of the ‘feel’ of a place and can plan future trips to cover uncharted territory with the benefit of more time and avoid wasting time in places that didn’t impress you.

Which destinations does Busabout travel to in Europe?
As you can see below, Busabout offers trips along four major ‘loops’, permitting travel to enviable cities such as Paris, Vienna, Budapest, Rome and Florence. However, you can also sign up to their adventure packages and see the wonders of the Amalfi coast, party all night long on a boat in Ibiza, tour ice bars in Scandinavia, walk down cobbled lanes in the Baltics, or take a dip in the Krka Waterfalls of Plitvice National Park in Croatia.
Why travel with Busabout?
If you’re planning on travelling alone, one of the greatest things that Busabout can offer you is the chance to interact with others in the same boat or in this case bus. Chances are high that you’ll encounter a group of travellers heading in the same direction as you who would like nothing more than to have a travel buddy. Sharing ideas with fellow passengers at backpackers will ensure you are doing the best activities and not missing interesting destinations or attractions along the way. The friendly travel community Busabout creates is another reason why it is the best way to travel through Europe.
Beyond the opportunity to meet a host of like-minded travellers (almost half of which are travelling solo!), the flexibility of altering your plans as you go along is the primary reason why people choose to travel with Busabout. If you’re so mesmerised by a city that you can’t bear the thought of moving on from it so quickly or hear about a cool event that you couldn’t possibly miss, you can simply stay a little longer. If you don’t get positive vibes in another city, just hop back onto the next bus! Whether you design your travel itinerary in advance or choose to wing it, you can use Busabout’s Hop-on, Hop-off network to get to your destination. As long as you make your booking at least 24 hours prior to departure, you can change your itinerary as often as you want and at no cost. Just one of the features that makes it the most flexible and cheapest way to get around Europe.

Wi-Fi enabled travel
With Wi-Fi enabled on their fleet of vehicles, there is no need to go MIA on friends and family back at home as you travel from place to place, giving them peace of mind.
With Busabout, you no longer have to fear being stung by excess baggage fees and penalties for not checking in online. Having a better understanding of your outgoings means you can more effectively budget and plan for the future. It is the cheapest way to travel Europe for an extended period and in my opinion also the best way to travel around Europe. Another quick tip I would encourage you to look into before travelling in Europe or anywhere else outside of your country is to ensure you have the best travel money card for Europe. This is an expense that can add up quickly while travelling otherwise.

Stress-free accommodation bookings
Travellers can arrange to be placed in hostels available at discounted prices on the recommendation of their guide and where possible, Busabout will ensure that you are taken to the doorstep of the building, meaning you won’t have to worry about lugging your heavy suitcase or backpack across the city. The company has great contacts at hostels and guest houses throughout the cities in which it operates and the quality of accommodation is generally very good for the price and inclusive of Wi-Fi. The guides on-board can help you to arrange a place to sleep for the night should you wish to jump off to explore a city. You can expect to stay in hostels with a lively ambience reminiscent of those first few gatherings during freshers’ week, which is the perfect way to meet other budding travellers. Ahh…bliss.
If you prefer to book your own accommodation that is also very much possible and never an issue, you can be as independent as you like while travelling, use the Busabout website to book everything through them in one easy location or use the help of the guides while travelling between destinations to assist with finding accommodation and booking activities.
When booking accommodation I use the following sites to compare prices:
Safety for belongings
Busabout is a long-established and major bus line operator within the travel industry and there is no need to worry about the safety of your belongings when they are locked up in the hold underneath the bus, as only your driver can access them.
The ease of designing your own itinerary
The trip planner, network map and coach timetable are a dream in terms of designing your travel route and will help you to get the most out of your pass. Not only can you design your own route, but you can also copy those of others as the website publishes a number of routes taken by fellow Busabouters.
Check out the preferred routes of other travellers
Ensuring your comfort in Busabout’s big blue buses is a key priority of the team. Although you need to be prepared to sit for long periods of time, the driver will make numerous ‘Rest Stops’ every 2-3 hours in order to allow you to grab some food, use the restroom, or stretch your legs.
The Busabout team truly care about providing you with a fun and stress-free travel experience. To this effect, you’ll be handed a Lonely Planet guide book providing details on the cities along the Busabout route, and a little something called the ‘Busabout Bible’, which contains both a timetable and a list of hostels in each city. Having all of this knowledge at your fingertips, without having to waste precious time you could spend exploring manically searching through webpages (like this one) on your phone is a great feature of the Busabout experience.
Busabout is extremely reliable and you can be sure that your Busabout pass will come with a guarantee. If you sign up for a trip you needn’t worry about a trip being cancelled due to an insufficient number of travellers being on board as the Busabout tour will still go on!
Do Busabout adventures and treks include accommodation?
With the exception of the Greek Island Hopper package, which is a flexible product, Busabout adventures and treks do include accommodation. For those sailing through Croatia or Turkey, accommodation is included onboard the boats, whilst those opting for the Scandi-Baltic Adventure will find that their accommodation is comprised of a mixture of hostels, guesthouses and on-board cruise accommodation during overnight sails. The Ibiza Island Hoppers, Iberian and Italian Adventures and Eastern European Treks, all feature accommodation too.
What other services does Busabout have?
Busabout is about enabling people to fulfil their lifelong travel goals and creating mind-blowing experiences. Other services available to budding travellers are festivals headlined by some of the biggest names in music and cruises to Greek and Croatian islands.

How much is accommodation booked via Busabout each night?
Accommodation is not included in the cost of your Busabout pass. However, prices are generally reasonable, ranging from 10 to 25 euro per night for a dorm room depending on the local economy. Naturally, some towns or cities are cheaper than others.
When booking accommodation I use the following sites to compare prices:
Working with Busabout
If you’re a passionate traveller and are the type to dedicate time to discovering the most incredible, ‘Instagrammable’ and fun places to visit whilst on holiday, you might want to consider working for Busabout, perhaps as a guide or a driver. Have a look at the Busabout recruitment page to get an idea of the types of roles available.
Is Busabout safe?
For first-time travellers, Buasabout is perhaps one of the safest modes of transportation. Not only are you surrounded by like-minded travellers, but your belongings are also secured, guides are available at all times to answer any queries or concerns you may have and the company will seek to take you precisely where you need to be (barring navigational obstacles such as narrow, winding roads of course!).
Are there any age limits?
In general, you need to be at least 18 years old at the time of travel. However, there are exemptions for those that are outside of this age restriction who are accompanied by a person of 18 years or older.
Students, don’t forget!
If you’re a student you must hold an International Student ID Card (ISIC) in order to take advantage of amazing student discounts; your university/college ID is not sufficient for the purposes of evidencing your student status. Don’t miss the opportunity to take advantage of Busabout’s great deals simply because you don’t have the correct documentation.
If your not a student but still looking to find some discounts on trips then check out the save money section for the discount tour or travel packages.
Conclusion – Busabout is a great option to explore Europe
So there you have it; Busabout is the key to the most fun-filled year of your life. Whether you choose to design your own holiday, go on an adventurous cruise, wave your glowsticks at a festival, or explore the beaches and temples in Southeast Asia, arranging your trip is as easy as making up your mind about the type of trip you want. See you in Venice!

Organise Your Trip: Travel Advice and Tricks I Personally Use
Book Your Flight
Heading to either Skyscanner or Momondo are my methods of choice for this. They are my favourite as they search for flights from different companies all over the world. You can filter the results to suit your needs and ensure you land the best price every-time.
Book Your Accommodation
This is an important part of any holiday you’re going on. Read all the reviews and get the right accommodation via TripAdvisor. They even show you the best prices available at the time for that room from suppliers like Booking.com.For booking a hostel your best bet is to start with HostelWorld or possible even use CouchSurfing if you’re on a real budget.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance
Travel Insurance is a must these days so you have a piece of mind you’re covered for anything that could go wrong while on your trip. I now never go on a trip away without travel insurance. I’ve been using World Nomads for the past few years.
My favourite companies that offer the best service and value are:
- World Nomads (little more expensive but covers everything)
- SafetyWing (cheaper option to just cover you for health issues)
Looking for the best companies to save money with?
As I have been travelling frequently over the last few years I’ve learnt some great tools to use for saving money when travelling. I have a travel resource page that lists all the trusted companies I personally use and rely on. I think you will find them good as well.
The Best Place To Book Your Tours
If you are someone you likes to have the best tours in one place and read reviews from other travellers about their personal experiences of each different tour then the best platform to use is GetYourGuide.
They offer the best tours, have money-back offers in case your trip is cancelled and ensure the price of each tour is the lowest possible.
