With year-round sunshine, incredible places of scenic beauty, and a whole host of things to do, it could be said that planning an Australian vacation for your next trip will ultimately lead you to one of the greatest places in the world.
But then again I could just be a little biased as I am a travel blogger from Australia after all.
Either way, if you’re currently in the planning stages for your next vacation, and if you have marked out Australia as a place you would like to explore, these are just a few of the incredible experiences you should add to your travel itinerary.

Dive into the depths of the Great Barrier Reef

One of the natural wonders of the world, and visible from the moon, the Great Barrier Reef is something you should definitely experience if you enjoy diving beneath the ocean depths. With over 1500 species of fish and with 300 types of coral beneath the crisp blue waters, there is much to explore, not least the opportunity to finally find Nemo (the fish not the fictional explorer). Located in the Coral Sea, just off the coast of Queensland, the Great Barrier Reef is worth visiting even if you don’t like scuba diving, as you can take a scenic helicopter ride above, or relax on the stunning shores and sands of Whitehaven Beach. Boat tours are also available, so you can get to experience life underwater from a seated position if you don’t want to get wet.
Experience the Yarra Valley
This scenic part of Victoria is worth a trip, as there are some gorgeous garden landscapes, wildlife-inhabited national parks, and a vast wine region to explore if you love nothing more than a tipple of red or white! Visiting the region is an experience in itself, whatever you do there, as you will be blown away by the local scenery and the sight of some of Australia’s perennial wildlife. We definitely recommend the wine tours in the Yarra Valley if you do want to indulge a little, and we also recommend the hot air balloon rides or helicopter flights if you want to get a birds-eye view of the beautiful Australian landscapes in the region.
Explore Kakadu National Park
If you want to get an up-close and personal look at some of Australia’s wildlife, then Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory is the place to be. It’s the biggest National Park in Australia, spanning almost 2000 square kilometres, and containing a vast array of wildlife species, including saltwater crocodiles, flatback turtles, sea eagles, wallabies, and more. You can also learn about Aboriginal culture from the Bininj/Mungguy people who live on the land, take a cruise on the wetlands, and swim beneath one of Kakadu’s many waterfalls when you’re hiking through the vast forest landscapes. There is much more to see and do here, as you can find out yourself by following the link above, so if you are planning a trip to Australia, you can probably tick off most of your bucket list by visiting this one place.
Drive on the Great Ocean Road
If you’re planning on an Australian road trip, then taking the 243-kilometre route of the Great Ocean Road could be the best drive you will ever take in your life. Spanning the southeastern coast of Australia, from Torquay to Warrnambool, there is much to do along the way, whether you want to explore a rainforest, surf on the sea, or try your hand at Koala-spotting when you’re taking your scenic drive. Take a look at some of the highlights here, then make sure your car is fully loaded for the trip, as you have a 3-day adventure ahead of you if you choose to see all that the Great Ocean Road has to offer.
Visit Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island has just been devastated by the worst bushfire in their history, like many of the southern areas in Australia they are trying to rebuild their community and towns. Tourism and positive energy at this time will do wonders for the area of Kangaroo Island and it is a beautiful part of Australia, so why not plan to add a visit here to your Australian vacation. No guessing for what you will see here, as this is possibly the best place in Australia if you want to see hopping kangaroos in their natural habitat. Just off the coast of South Australia, you can spend all day here if you want to experience life with these fabulous animals. You might see a koala or two here as well, and you will also get to walk on beaches that are lined with rare and endangered sea lions. There are camping spots here if you want to stay overnight, and there are plenty of places to eat and drink too, so you have a lot to experience if you do decide to visit. This guide to Kangaroo Island will tell you all you need to know.
We have barely scratched the surface here, as there are many more incredible experiences awaiting you in the land Down Under. Still, add our suggestions to your bucket list, and have a look online and around our website for other ideas for your Australian vacation.

Organise Your Trip: Travel Advice and Tricks I Personally Use
Book Your Flight
Heading to either Skyscanner or Momondo are my methods of choice for this. They are my favourite as they search for flights from different companies all over the world. You can filter the results to suit your needs and ensure you land the best price every-time.
Book Your Accommodation
This is an important part of any holiday you’re going on. Read all the reviews and get the right accommodation via TripAdvisor. They even show you the best prices available at the time for that room from suppliers like Booking.com.For booking a hostel your best bet is to start with HostelWorld or possible even use CouchSurfing if you’re on a real budget.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance
Travel Insurance is a must these days so you have a piece of mind you’re covered for anything that could go wrong while on your trip. I now never go on a trip away without travel insurance. I’ve been using World Nomads for the past few years.
My favourite companies that offer the best service and value are:
- World Nomads (little more expensive but covers everything)
- SafetyWing (cheaper option to just cover you for health issues)
Looking for the best companies to save money with?
As I have been travelling frequently over the last few years I’ve learnt some great tools to use for saving money when travelling. I have a travel resource page that lists all the trusted companies I personally use and rely on. I think you will find them good as well.
I also have a couple of great blogs that share quick and easy ways to save money on flights or accommodation. Take a look and save some cash on your next trip.
The Best Place To Book Your Tours
If you are someone you likes to have the best tours in one place and read reviews from other travellers about their personal experiences of each different tour then the best platform to use is GetYourGuide.
They offer the best tours, have money-back offers in case your trip is cancelled and ensure the price of each tour is the lowest possible.
