Traveling Guide to Morocco

Morocco is a unique and interesting experience for a traveller and one that could be a little confronting if it is your first overseas vacation. You will undoubtedly find beautiful places and a different way of life in Morocco but you also need to be aware of your surroundings and keep some common sense about you to ensure a safe trip.

Morocco will always hold a special place in my heart as it was the first African country I visited as well as being the location I first tried surfing. It normally doesn’t take an Australian until Morocco to try surfing but it did for me. The surfing in the coastal Moroccan areas of Taghazout, Imsouane and Agadir produce great surfing conditions for beginners through to experienced riders.

When not surfing there are also many different cities and towns in Morocco tourists should visit. Some are quite unique and different to anywhere you are likely to visit. One of the most famous tourist destinations in Morocco is called Chefchaouen, which is a town that is almost completely painted blue. This is a beautiful place to spend a few days and also one of the safest places in Morocco from my experience. Other locations to visit include Fes, Casablanca, Essaouira and Marrakech. Visiting these cities offers something different but you can’t leave Morocco before visiting a Medina or two. These are what Morocco is famous for and a great place to find traditional crafts and souvenirs.

The other must-visit area for tourists travelling in Morocco is the Sahara Desert. You can organise tours for multi-day trips from many of the main cities such as Marrakech and Fes. The highlights of these tours include taking a camel ride into the desert and spending a night under the stars in a specialised camping area. The night sky you witness in the desert is simply incredible. Kasbah of Tifoultoute, the city of Ouarzazate and the Tizi n Tichka road are other highlights of this trip. Be careful though where you book these tours, I suggest booking them online with a known company such as Viator or GetYourGuide. Read the reviews on the sites from other travellers to ensure they deliver a good and safe tour. This is the tour I recommend taking to the Sahara Desert.
